Yesterday, late afternoon, we were on the way back home to Hollywood Beach and my sisters house. As we drove past a large cleared paddock whhich is being prepared for development, I caught sight of a Wood Stork stood motionless in the middle amongst the plant vehicles. . I immediately turned the car and went back to see if I could get close enough to photograph. As I approached it didn't seem too concerned and eventually, using the diggers and tracters as cover, I got within "range". Theses birds, once in serious decline in Florida are now doing a little better. They are three feet tall and ugly as hell. They have a massive beak with a bald head and neck which is covered in crusty skin. They feed on fish so quite why they have evolved the kind of head that a vulture would be proud of, I dont know. All inall, yesterday, with temperatures that didn't reach 70, in fact it was low 60.s was the coldest that I have experienced in South Florida. It was however, a very productive day for birds.
