The Speckled Wood butterfly is not a rare species and you can pretty much find one if you look hard enough in many parts of Devon, including locally. We are again suffering from showery weather with the odd spell of sunshine. In the odd dry moment this lunchtime, I was pleased to see this individual in the garden. They are normally associated with shaded woodland areas so it is a little unusual to have one in a suburban garden and I can't remember seeing one before. This is a species that is doing well and not threatened or in need of special protection. The eye spots are used to confuse predatory birds that will peck at these areas rather than the soft body of the insect. This specimen is a male.
