What an interesting hour I spent out at the wood this early evening. Yesterday the feeders on the edge of the wood had started to attract some visitors. I had placed the feeder here in the open, in the meadow and on the edge of the wood because I want to get some photos of birds in flight and in natural light and I am 100% sure that is going to happen now. One of the things about wildlife watching and of course, my photography is just an extension of that and no more, is the unpredictability of it and surprises that you can encounter. I sat waiting for 20 minutes or so and was a little bit deflated when it seemed as though it was going to be quiet.......... not one bird had visited the feeder (yet). A Robin came down on to the log where a few peanuts and a day old chick waited and I focused in on him. Then, suddenly a Jay was on the log.... I was pleased. He ate a few peanuts and then picked up a 'day-old" and flew off with it. This was just what I had wanted. I broke the cardinal rule at this point, I decided to review what I had photographed and while I was distracted and out the corner of my eye, there it was by the gate a Fox with a big fat Rabbit!! I cursed because I just couldn't focus on him before he disappeared in to the wood with his prize. Thats twice this year that I have seen a Fox with a Rabbit and each time I have missed the photo! In typical nonchalant fashion he had walked down the edge of the field, probably under cover and then I had only seen him when he had crossed in front of me. They never seem to be in an excessive hurry, just trotting along with an air of supreme confidence!
