Friday is a day that I am "car-less" and restricted to the house unless I put in a lot of effort to get out the hide so I have had the opportunity to watch the garden a bit more than normal. Yesterday I had "loaded" the conifer bushes in front of the kitchen window with apple pieces because I realised that it was in this week last year that the first Blackcap of the season had arrived in the garden. The German popluation of breeding birds has taken to over-wintering here in the UK and particularly in Devon. In previous years I have noticed how apple is so loved by this species and when I have seen them in the garden previously it's almost always been when they have been feeding on apple pieces. Obviously, I have been keeping a very close eye out and I couldnt believe it when I looked from the bedroom window at around midday and there it was....... a female Blackcap, feeding just as I expected on the apple.
Heres one from a previous year as a taster............... feeding on apple of course, hopefully more to come, even today hopefully.
