Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
A new feature on the blog today, I am calling it...."Picture of the Day" this is a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), photographed in the Florida Everglades. This is a species is very similar to the Grey Heron (below) that we are familiar with in the UK and Europe, they are very similar. This one was on the Exeter Canal.
Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)
The Grey Heron is a predatory bird, in fact the UK's largest preadatory bird. They eat mainly fish and frogs but will also take ducklings, voles and even baby rabbits. Below is a Purple Heron, larger than the Grey Heron and a resident of Europe and ocassionally we see them in the UK. Their diet is going to be exactly he same as the birds above.
Purple Heron - Ardea purpurea
A handsome large bird even bigger than than the Grey Heron, I have seen them in Spain, Sri Lanka and the one above was photographed in Cape Town.
The Great White Egret is another favourite of mine and a very familiar sight in the USA but very surprisingly this is also a bird of Europe and regularly, now the UK. I always see them on my regular visits to the USA in fact they are hard to avoid and you will see them with certainty in the right habitat. The face changes colour depending on their breeding condition. This one was photographed at Sawgrass Park in the Everglades.
Black - headed Heron-Ardea melanocephala
This is a Black - headed Heron Ardea melanocephala another large heron this one was photographed on a golf course in the Western Cape, South Africa. An interesting bird because they are not as aquatic as the other ones featured.
