I went back out on tho the moor late yesterday afternoon, there was rain in the air and it was overcast but the light was nice, soft and diffused. The reason for my visit was to try and get some closer photographs of the male Stonechat who's ring number needed to be read. The data that could be ascertained from the ring is crucial to a long-term study of the Stonechats in this area. I positioned myself, camouflaged and in front of a Hawthorn bush where both parents seemed to be visiting regularly. This indicated to me that the young recently fledged youngsters were very nearby. Both birds came and went but the variety of other birds was very rewarding. Suddenly, after seeing Yellowhammer, Dunnnock and a young Willow Warbler...... a bird that took me a few seconds to identify, was right there. It was a Redstart. At first I thought it was a juvenile male but I now know it was in fact, a newly moulted adult male. Birds go in to a moult after breeding, the tips of these new feathers gradually wear away to reveal the bright colours beneath.
