. The other day I went out with 5 other birders out from Sagres to try to photograph the seabirds that are resident or, over-winter at the continental shelf about 12 miles offshore. In actual fact, we didn't need to go out that far before we encountered a large raft of Cory's Shearwater with the odd critically endangered Balearic Shearwater amongst them as well, what a sight. Photography was particularly difficult because of the chop, speed of travel and limited space. That said, it was an awesome, wonderful experience. The highlight turned out to be the numbers of dolphins that we saw. For an hour of the 3-hour trip, we had dolphins, mostly Bottle Nose, with us constantly. They were leaping and breaching and I even saw them carrying fish and also calves swimming alongside their mothers. It was just absolutely brilliant!!!! The best €45 I have ever spent and literally 2 thirds cheaper than the equivalent out of Cape Town. (Come on Cape Town Pelagics...reduce your prices!) This morning I wandered around some wasteland behind our hotel and bumped into a fabulous Hoopoe in the rising sunlight just after dawn and I managed to get really close before a local man looking for his lost guard dog disturbed it. He told me the dog would attack me if it saw me so I left ASAP.
