Not a tropical Ecuador bird by any means but when you look really close at the common House Sparrow you can see that they are much smarter than you realise. We have a small colony in our back garden and they scrape a living in the bushes that I leave to run wild. Its a constant battle with Jenny to leave them untrimmed but without them, there would be nothing for the sparrows to feed on. They constantly scour for small insects and aphids, sparrows eat more insects than you would imagine. It is thought that the way people maintain their gardens is the reason that Sparrows have declined in the UK by 150 million birds in the last 30 years. Is that something we should be ashamed of? I think so. I enjoy taking pictures of "my" sparrows from the bathroom window.
